LEGEND OF SAN CRISTOBAL

According to our ancestors, there was a poor couple that lived in the mountain who had a son named caneneo. A small boy, Caneneo was naturally brilliant, strong, obedient, and religious. Although Caneneo helped his parents in their works, they did not like him because of his excessive eating.

One day, Caneneo and his father went fishing. Fortunately, they caught a very big fish. The father could not haul it up so he asked Caneneo to swim and get the fish from the sea bed. While he was under the sea, his father rushed home assuming that Caneneo got drowned. The father was just approaching their house when the boy arrived carrying the big fish. The couple was very disappointed because their son returned home.

The following day, Caneneo and his father went to a far-off mountain to gather pieces of wood that they will use in building their house. His father asked him to cut a very big tree. When the tree was about to fall down, Caneneo’s father asked him to stay where the tree will fall. When the big tree fall down, his father went home immediately and gladly told his wife about the death of their son. “Our son is surely dead, we’ve got no more to feed.” He asked his wife to cook right away.

The food was almost ready when they heard the voice of Caneneo, “Father, here’s the lumbers, where shall I put them?”

The couple was frustrated and finally decided to drive shun their son away. However, the boy did not lose his hope. He strengthened instead his faith in the Almighty God. He found himself near a river called “Makapatay-Ahas”. He committed himself in helping people cross the wide river.

One day, because of his strong faith in God, he was tested by the Almighty if he could be a saint. The Lord Jesus transformed himself into a young boy and asked Caneneo to bring him to the other side of the river. They were almost half-way crossing the river, when Caneneo noticed that the boy was very heavy. He asked the boy, “Who are you? You’re so little and yet you are so heavy.”

The boy replied, I am Jesus Christ who carries the world. From now on, because of all the goodness you have shown since you were a child, I will make you a saint and change your name into San Cristobal.

And this is where Barrio San Cristobal got its name, a place that lies at the foot slope of a mountain where this story happened.
